Retreat Workshops

Art Project – Hinged Box Book with Judy Lee:

Learn how to create a hinged box and let your imagination create the many uses this project can be used for in your classroom, from art projects to social studies to poetry units and reading.  The options are endless.  We will construct the basic box together and work through the art process as you create a “book box” of your own.

Please bring sharp scissors and a craft knife.

About Judy:

After teaching Special Education for over a decade, Judy Lee  decided she wanted to get her certification to teach Art.  This journey had her  returning to college and leaving her  job.

After completing her course work, Judy was hired as a contracted Special Needs Teacher at the Seacoast Charter School, an arts integrated school in Kingston, NH.  After her first year she was offered a part time position teaching art to Grades 1 and 2.  Judy is currently in her third year teaching art for grades 1-4 and next year will be teaching art full time as the K-4 art teacher.  Her focus in art is the process not the product.  Students learn to critique their work for what is working well and what can be changed to improve their art work.  These skills are then transferred into their academic studies.

Poetry Workshop – Poetry Unhinged: It’s Just Words, Man! with Ayanna Gallant

In all actuality words, are quite powerful. Ayanna Gallant will guide you in learning how to take a seemingly intimidating art form and make it into something fun and purposeful for you and/or your students.

About Ayanna:

Ayanna Gallant, M.Ed. has a true passion for arts in the community. She has been a music and poetry artistic leader for non-profit groups such as Jazzmouth, Arts in Reach and With Open Minds. She teaches poetry workshops for youth and adults in schools and most recently, for the Seacoast Writer’s Association. Everyday she feels lucky to share her love for the arts as a music teacher at the Deerfield Community School in Deerfield, NH. Gallant earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of New Hampshire for Music Education and also holds a Master of Education Degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on Arts Integration. Fancy degrees aside, Ayanna credits her students, colleagues and New England poetry family for teaching her about the things that matter most, creating and learning.

Music Workshop – Instruments Out of the Box with Elizabeth Peterson

In this workshop we will demystify instruments and explore the many uses they have in our learning.  We will play in drumming circles and compose music together.  Emphasis will be put on how instrument use can be used in your classrooms to create community and explore concepts.  You will have lots of playing time here!

About Elizabeth:

Elizabeth Peterson has devoted her life to education and to reaching out to other teachers who want to remain inspired.  Mrs. Peterson teaches fourth grade in Amesbury, Massachusetts and is the host of www.theinspiredclassroom.com.  She holds an M.Ed. in Education, “Arts and Learning” and is currently enrolled in a C.A.G.S. program through Plymouth State University with a focus in “Arts Leadership and Learning.”  Elizabeth is author of Inspired by Listening, a teacher resource book that includes a method of music integration she has developed and implemented into her own teaching.  She teaches workshops and courses on the integration of the arts into the curriculum, leads an arts integration PLC (PLaiC) and is adjunct faculty for PSU.  Mrs. Peterson believes there is a love of active, integrated learning in all children and from their enthusiasm, teachers can shape great opportunities to learn.

Drama Workshop – Learning to be “Off- Book” with Judith Clark

Join Judith Clark in the playing of a few classroom friendly theatre games and learn how to incorporate theatre into your teaching with very little drama!  Learn how to write and format scripts for class plays, promote public speaking and put on a classroom play from auditions to performance.

About Judith:

Judith Clark is currently a 6th grade language arts teacher in Hampton, NH.  She earned her B.A. in Theatre with acting and directing concentrations and English Writing Arts with concentrations in playwriting and fiction writing at SUNY Oswego.  Her M.S. in English Secondary Education was earned at Long Island University/C.W. Post.

Ms. Clark has directed musicals at both the high school and middle school levels.  In 1999 she began to develop the after school drama program at Hampton Academy, and has since produced twelve successful school plays and used the profits to invest in lighting and sound equipment and other materials to improve the theatrical experience.  The Hampton Academy Players are made up of audition-based actors with a student technical crew. The philosophy is that excellence is the only option when there is an audience involved.
