One of the best ways to illustrate freedom in structure is in a drum circle. Here, a leader starts by drumming an ostinato or rhythm that is repeated over and over. Then the others in the circle begin to play. Some play alongside the leader, others play their own creations, adding their own creative rhythms.
Magically, it all fits together, making one amazing piece of music.
The ostinato starts
ta, ta, ti-ti, ta
ta, ta, ti-ti, ta
I nod to the group
and slowly they come in
Some mimic my rhythm
others add their own
ta, ta, ti-ti, ta
ta, ta, ti-ti, ta
someone shakes maracas
another scrapes the sand
one clicks on the claves
another taps the bells in her hand
ta, ta, ti-ti, ta
ta, ta, ti-ti, ta
a CLASH
comes out of nowhere
but it seems to fit right in
eggs shshshshshshake
alllllllll along
ta, ta, ti-ti, ta
ta, ta, ti-ti, ta
Groovin’
Feelin’
Mixin’
Together
ta, ta, ti-ti, ta
ta, ta, ti-ti, ta
Then slowly 4
But steady 3
Preparing 2
To STOP
The silence now is deafening
And we are satisfied

“YES!”
Ostinato – a short rhythm that is perpetually repeated throughout a piece of music. Here, it serves as the structure in which others have the freedom to play.
WOW! This really grabbed me, Elizabeth! I want more and more!!!
I will be sure to get on to the related sites. Thank you! Mary Linda
I’m glad! There’s just something about a drum and drumming with others, huh? Drum on, my friend! 😉
The ostinato was so aptly demonstated in our class with you leading the drum circle. All of us following the same rhythm on assortment of different drums. It was a very soothing and calming.
I just commented to Christine that maybe we should record our own drum ostinato track to use in our classrooms and offices for whenever we see fit. What do you think?
I love the community building this provides. It is safe, diverse, great fun, and provides layers of learning. I’m bringing my instruments back out of the closet!
YAY!!! Do it. Do it. You go girl. I can feel your spark coming back!
Elizabeth, I loved that drumming circle. You know at first I felt a slight hesitation to jump in but once I felt that rhythm and the comfort it was quite easy and very lovely!! I can certainly understand the value of this experience for community building for all learners. I hope we can do it again…Thank you again for sharing your wealth of knowledge with us.
