Museum Box

Again, Melissa comes to us with another great online program to try in the classroom- Museum Box.  What a great resource she is!  Please be sure to follow her at @mwedwards. ~EMP

Several months ago, I came across Museum Box and shared it with elementary school teachers as a possible way to do some of the February Black History Month projects they had planned. A few months later, I showed Museum Box to some middle school teachers as one of many ways to do effective presentations. I thought it might be a good way for students to present research, especially related to Social Studies and History. I was pleasantly surprised how the art and dance teachers seemed excited to try out this tool. Several of those teachers have used it to organize information and pictures for instruction. They have also had several questions about the program, so I looked around and found some advice, tips, and tricks to share. This wiki has even more resources as well as a list of strengths, weaknesses, and possible lesson ideas related to the use of Museum Box. Think about all the projects that could be possible with this one tool.

After teaching 4th grade for seven years, with a focus on reading and writing, Melissa Edwards worked as a gifted education resource teacher for one year at a magnet school for the visual and performing Arts. While in the classroom, she focused on Problem-Based Learning and using technology in her classroom. Her favorite things to teach involve reading and writing, as well as using those to tap into students’ creativity and using problem-based learning as well as technology. Melissa believes technology can be used in various ways to meet the needs of all learners and to open up the world. In order to better prepare students for the future, technology must be a key component to and in their education. Now, as an instructional resource specialist for her county’s school system, Melissa helps teachers discover ways to use technology tools to meet the instructional needs of students.

Has anyone heard from Museum Box about the issues listed on the previous posts? I had my students create a Powerpoint presentation with 4-5 slides and when we attach the file there is no way to view it.

I have contacted them using support@e2bn.org and put webapps in the subject line. They will then assign a case number and you will hear back. I am awaiting a response from them currently. A class created their museum boxes and submitted them for approval and now they have vanished! Hope they can be retrieved.

I also submitted a request using the support email listed above. I received a very quick response and I think it may have solved the problem of viewing Powerpoints and Word documents. The students must submit the Museum Box to the teacher and the teacher must approve it. After it is approved, you are able to view the Powerpoint or the Word document. We worked on the boxes in my class today and there were some frustrating problems, but overall my students were able to create a box and attach the items. The problem seems to be when you return to your box. Sometimes saved information is no longer there. We also had problems when all 17 students were working in Museum Box at the same time.

What one puts in the drawer is only available until you close it. Items do not permanantly stay in the drawer. One can view the docs, etc. after the project has been saved and submitted.

Angela, I am having those problems too now. I have contacted the creators of Museum box and will let you know what I find out.

I could not find contact info for museum box. Can you please forward it to me. My daughter worked over the weekend on a report and when she logged in tonite her project files were gone?

I am having several issues-problems loading, work from previously saved boxes gone, cube sides reading undefined, inability to save text artifacts and so on-it seems like Museum Box may not be equipped to handle multiple users when my students use it in the lab. I have tried to reach the original person who approved our account and have not received an answer. I may need to find another product althought this one has so much potential!
